David Halat

Assistant Professor, Chemistry

halat_headshot_2023_edit David HalatDr. David Halat was born in Bozeman, Montana, and completed dual B.S. degrees in Chemistry and in Mathematics at Montana State University in 2013. He then traveled to the United Kingdom to join the University of Cambridge, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2018 under the supervision of Prof. Clare Grey, focusing on solid-state NMR of functional energy storage materials for fuel cells and batteries. Following his Ph.D., he moved to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California, Berkeley, where he conducted postdoctoral research until 2023. Dr. Halat joins the Colorado School of Mines as a researcher developing NMR methodology and instrumentation. His research has led to the development of electrophoretic NMR, an in situ technique that allows for the direct measurement of ion transport in materials and electrolytes. This work is crucial for advancing the understanding of ion dynamics in energy storage systems, central to tackling issues related to decarbonization. Outside of the lab, Dr. Halat enjoys spending time cycling and hiking.
