Assistant Teaching Professor, Chemistry

Amanda_furness_cropped Amanda FurnessDr. Amanda Furness was born and raised in Iowa. She got her undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Spanish at Briar Cliff University, a small liberal arts institution in her hometown. After graduating, she moved to Kansas where she got her PhD in Analytical Chemistry at KU. Her dissertation work focused on quantitatively measuring the neurochemical effects of epilepsy. Upon completion of her doctoral work, she moved to Boston where she did a two year post-doc at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Center for Genomic Medicine. There, her research was a translational medicine project focused on developing therapies for the orphaned neurogenetic disease, Mucolipidosis IV. 

Dr. Furness has been an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Colorado Christian University for the past five years.  In her time there she was able to focus her career goals and became passionate about teaching and being in the classroom.  Her teaching pedagogy focuses on critical thinking and problem solving.  She is also incredibly passionate about reaching underrepresented populations in the STEM field.  Dr. Furness is very excited to be joining the Mines Chemistry Department as a Teaching Assistant professor.
