RESEARCH interests

I have a passion to develop a top notch yet unique freshman chemistry lecture/ laboratory program at the Colorado School of Mines.  I have taught at too many colleges and universities where the freshman chemistry curriculum is the same old crap that has been taught for decades using the same old boring methods.  The students walk away from chemistry not really understanding its connection to everything in the world and are just plain bored throughout their experience.  And I am sure departments lose potential majors because of this.  Chemistry can be fun, in fact by its very nature, it is fun.  We just have to tap into the fun and wonder of chemistry with demos, exciting lectures and meaningful, rewarding laboratory experiences.  My ultimate goal here at Mines is to have students leave their freshman chemistry experience saying, “wow, that was awesome, I like chemistry and I learned some chemistry that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”  Or even better, “wow, I want to major in chemistry!”
